Overview
A journey into South Africa's history
Just a few kilometres across Table Bay lies an island whose story reaches far beyond Cape Town. Robben Island has served many purposes over the centuries, but it is best known as the place where political prisoners were held during apartheid. Among them was Nelson Mandela, who spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment on the island. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of South Africa's most significant historical destinations.
Cross Table Bay
Your experience begins with collection from your hotel or another agreed pick-up point. The ferry crossing takes you across Table Bay towards the island, with a completely different perspective of the city and Table Mountain behind you.
Discover Robben Island
Learn about the island's role as a place of banishment and imprisonment, and about the people whose experiences there became intertwined with South Africa's struggle against apartheid. Mandela was imprisoned here for 18 years before becoming South Africa's first democratically elected president.
More than an island
Robben Island is not simply another Cape Town attraction. It is a place of difficult history, extraordinary human stories and profound significance to modern South Africa.
